About OCAN

OCAN is the acronym for Online Competency ANalysis. It uses elements of the DACUM process, a proven method of occupational analysis performed face-to-face with a panel of experts and a trained facilitator. It also uses elements of the Delphi process (more information about Delphi can be found here and here).

With your help, this research will build two charts outlining the general areas of competence and specific tasks required of eLearning developers and eLearning instructional designers. The first OCAN will examine the competencies and tasks required of developers. The overall procedure involves three rounds of online, collaborative brainstorming as shown below. I will collate and edit the comments for clarity after each round.

I’ll produce a chart of general areas of competency required of developers and then ask participants to rate each task for its frequency, importance, and performance expectations. Then we’ll repeat the entire process for instructional designers.
